Late Work Policy |
Classroom Expectations |
I do not accept late work for any minor assignments (worksheets/activities other than final essay drafts). I will make my due dates for each assignment very clear so that there is no confusion. I will give ample work time in class and a reasonable amount of homework to ensure that every student has the ability to be successful. In return, I ask that you practice responsibility and turn all work in by the deadline. Of course, students are still welcome to turn in late work for the sake of learning the material; however, they will not receive points in Powerschool.
I do accept final essay drafts that are turned in late; however, these will receive partial credit. Final essay drafts turned in within the first week after the original due date (1-5 school days) will receive 80% credit maximum. Essays turned in two weeks after the original due date (6-10 school days) will receive 50% credit maximum. An essay turned in 11+ school days late will not receive credit. Tests and quizzes will be given to all students in attendance that day, even if they were absent in the days prior. Again, I will make all upcoming test/quiz dates as well as reading schedules very clear to students, so there will be no excuse for being unprepared. If a student has an unexcused absence on the day of a test or quiz, he/she will not be permitted to make up the test or quiz (in other words, they will receive a zero). If a student has an excused absence on the day of a quiz, he/she must take the quiz the following day in class. If a student has an excused absence on the day of a test, he/she must set up a time to take the test within the next school week (5 school days after the original test date). Make-up tests are taken after school in my classroom or the detention room. Cell Phone PolicyWhile cell phones can be useful and fun at times, they can also cause great distraction in the classroom. Because of this, the use of cell phones in my classroom is prohibited during lecture time and whole-class/group activities. I and your classmates should have your undivided attention during these times. Usually, I will allow students to listen to music during independent work time unless it becomes a distraction to themselves or others. Also, if a student finishes an assignment early and is waiting for instruction, I don't mind if you have your phone out. However, if a student is caught using his or her cell phone during prohibited times, or the phone becomes a distraction in any other way, I reserve the right to take the phone for the remainder of class. Further disciplinary measures will be taken as needed.

My classroom expectations are simple, but they are also very important to me. My desire is to create a classroom environment where each student feels comfortable, safe, and ready to learn. I have found that the following expectations need to be met by both myself and my students in order for this to work:
Copying/PlagiarismIt is extremely important to me that my students have academic integrity and do their own work. Copying/plagiarism will not be tolerated. If a student is found copying any work from a classmate, both the student providing answers and the student who copied will receive an automatic zero on the assignment. If an essay (or any other assignment) is copied from an online source without proper citation, the assignment will receive an automatic zero. Students who receive a zero for these reasons will not be permitted to redo the assignment. "Repeat offenders" may receive additional disciplinary action.
